What Early Detection Can Mean

What is early detection?
Early detection means a disease, usually cancer, is caught early. Recognizing possible warning signs and taking action leads to early diagnosis and successful treatment. An important part of early detection is screening.

What is screening?
Screening is the use of simple tests to see if people have a disease but do not yet have symptoms. Some examples include: breast cancer screening (mammography) cervical cancer screening (Pap tests) and colorectal cancer screenings (colonoscopies).

Why does it matter?
Detecting diseases early means they can be treated early, often successfully and at less cost, and you can go on with your life.
